We have been speaking to our third year Hull air conditioning apprentice, Juso about what his role entails and why he chose to follow this route to begin his career.

Hi, I’m Juso Hasanovic and I’m a trainee air conditioning engineer studying a EAL NVQ Level 3 in Installing & Commissioning Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Equipment.

What is a typical day for you as an apprentice at GW?

A typical day being an apprentice is carrying out tasks which have been assigned to me or using my initiative to know what needs doing to progress completing the job. This can entail completely different things day to day, I may be simply observing what the engineer is doing and giving him a hand or given a job to carry out independently. 

What made you chose to the apprentice route?

Going down the apprenticeship route was better for myself as I was working as just a mate before working for GW. Once I have the qualifications behind me it’ll open more doors for opportunities in the future. 

What is a goal you hope to achieve in the next 12 months?

My goal for the next 12 months is to be a lot more independent and confident. I want to progress further into completing my apprenticeship so I can earn more money for myself and the company.

What skills do you think are make a successful apprentice?

I believe the key to being a good apprentice is making sure you come to work with a good attitude, you’re keen to take on board all help and advice given to you and have confidence with your work. You’ll get things wrong along the way but that only means when you come to do it next time you’ll get it right.  

What do you like most about being an apprentice?

The thing I like the most about being an apprentice is gaining the skills and experience that’s needed to complete my apprenticeship and progress into a good engineer.
